Richmond's Eden MacDonald founded AIM International Aid, a nonprofit organization, after spending time in Sri Lanka just prior to the tsunami that devastated the island on Dec. 26, 2004.
MacDonald's foundation was recently awarded a $15,000 grant from One Horizon Foundation in Lexington, Kentucky. The much-needed funds will be used towards AIM's latest project, the building of a nutrition centre in Galle, Sri Lanka.
In the future, AIM hopes to expand the facilities into a children's village that would include: a medical/dental clinic, children's library, playground, vocational training centre and community centre.
The Children's Village will be built on eight acres of land surrounded by 180 homes already constructed for families affected by the 2004 tsunami.
AIM estimates that the nutrition centre will initially feed approximately 50 children, but that number is expected to mushroom to 500 once the village is complete.
It's truly inspirational what one person can do. Congratulations to MacDonald. Mark your calendars: A fundraiser in support of AIM's projects will be held on Saturday, Sept. 15 at the Scout Hall on the corner of No. 1 and Francis roads. Details can be found on AIM's website, www.aimias.org.
