In 2005, AIM began running two nutrition centers on the East Coast in the villages of Nediyamadu and Unnichchai. These villages are located in LTTE controlled areas that have unreliable access to electricity, water and education facilities. Between 30 and 50 children attend each nutrition center, all between the ages of 3 and 5. Since 2006, the Nediyamadu center has become self-sufficient.
During 2007, the children and their parents were forced to abandon their villages for IDP (Internally Displaced People) camps as the conflict between the LTTE and government forces intensified. In the months that followed, the children and their families received small rations from a temporary nutrition center set-up by the original nutrition center teachers. Every child was accounted for.
The children and their families have now returned to the villages. Due to the battling between the LTTE and the government forces the nutrition centres have been severely damaged. Until there is more certainty that this part of the country will become and remain substantially more peaceful
we will wait to rebuild. In the meantime the devoted teachers and cooks will continue to teach and feed the children as best as they can.
